About Herbert Carnegie

Transformation from athlete to community icon

Herb Carnegie born in 1919 in Toronto Ontario was an accomplished athlete best known for his talent in hockey and golf.  Following his outstanding seventeen-year career in hockey, he established the first registered hockey school in Canada in 1955 called Future Aces – always striving to be the best we can be. A year later he wrote and introduced the Future Aces Philosophy to his young players to help instill the values of positive leadership and good citizenship.  With this shift from teaching formalized hockey skills to including service and sportsmanship values, he entered a new phase of his life.  He transformed from an athlete to a community icon, devoting the next fifty years of his life to serving the community.

His story is now HISTORY.

Author of the Future ACES Philosophy

The Future A.C.E.S. Creed was based on the acrostic A.C.E.S.   Mr. Carnegie created the creed as a character guideline of expectations of how he wanted to live his life and of how he wanted others to treat him. He grew up feeling different, the only Black student in his classes throughout school, and an anomaly in his career as a Black hockey player on primarily all-white teams.

The values he aspired to live by include these attributes:

  • Attitude: Ability: Action: Achievement

  • Courage: Confidence: Cooperation

  • Example: Empathy: Education

  • Service: Sportsmanship

The Future Aces Philosophy transitioned in the 1970s to being adopted by hundreds of schools throughout Ontario in programs and initiatives that supported anti-bullying, anti-racism, and safe school environments. Future Aces was a forerunner to our present standard of Character Education. For many years the Ontario Ministry of Education financially assisted in the expansion of Future Aces throughout the province as one of its valued character development initiatives.

Mr. Carnegie expressed a desire to incorporate a philanthropic arm beyond their already successful school programs.  In December 1987 with his wife Audrey and daughter Bernice they founded the Herbert H. Carnegie Future Aces Foundation that has subsequently supported students across Canada with close to a million dollars in scholarship and citizenship awards. Mr. Carnegie’s desire to give back has inspired many hundreds of civic-minded youth, adults, and leaders, creating a movement under the Future Aces banner that continues to this day.
